The Hospital for Sick Kids is a magical machine

I twitter pic’d Friday that I was at the worlds greatest hospital — The Hospital for Sick Children, AKA SickKids.ca in Toronto. This is one of those magical scary places that you never really understand until you leave there. For many it’s about getting there and just being able to see a doctor. For me and my family it’s all about leaving. If you ever experience the misfortune... [Read more]

We love Google logo art

Stylizing logo art isn’t new but, certainly Google has taken the art to a science while keeping a healthy sense of humour about it. There’s an old saying about “the little things being the difference” and I have to agree. While it’s true that Google’s commitment to a very simple home page doesn’t give them that much to work with, it’s also true that they (out of necessity) have shown... [Read more]

Engaging the community pays It forward

It has been a few months since I was turning knobs of the pneumatic tubes of The eMail Guide and I must admit I like what I see – growth and change and development. Not so fun when my teenager is going through something like that, but as far as Jeff and Jim go it is terrifically exciting. The design of the website is now much more streamlined and focused on its message of being a search engine... [Read more]

Internet & eMail marketing site, Onedegree.ca stops the presses

As wired as we are here at The eMail Guide, we still have to admit that we missed some surprising news this past month. Onedegree.ca, the brainchild of internet marketing Presario, Ken Shcafer, has halted its digital presses. Ken moved on to other challenges and Kate Trgovac took over the site and continued to distil a lot of eMail and internet marketing knowledge into wisdom with a strong Canadian... [Read more]

Google Labs has nothing on MailChimp

It certainly doesn’t shock me that monkeys can run their own testing lab when I consider all their accomplishments. Think about it, get enough monkeys in a room with enough typewriters and you’ve got yourself Shakespeare! So, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that MailChimp has the little darlings running around in lab coats carrying laptops and compiling code. This, I imagine is the scene at the... [Read more]

A real life story example of a great marketer doing some great marketing…. I was surfing around with key board (and not surfboard) and suddenly came across this great banner – that led to an attractive landing page.  I had a compelling urge to fill out the form and become the converted. Below are email campaigns that I have been subscribed to for quite a while – more than five years – and provide a good lens on my perspective from an arts and culture communications.  As Seth Godin might point out, these are my tribes and I am fiercely loyal to these brands, albeit for different reasons. ——————————————————————————————————————————————— Email... [Read more]

A blog post by Bronto today talks about UNICEF’s recent list-cleansing and re-engagement campaign with good strategy advice and examples.   This is important right now as in this economy no one wants to wast any resources on sending email to a subscriber who never opens it – especially non-profits. So when a large charitable organization like UNICEF addresses this issue, it acts as a timely... [Read more]

Which Test Won is one of my favorite games

I remember the days of the early Marketing Sherpa Email Summits when Anne and Stefan would get up on stage as part of their opening and play a rousing game of Which Test Won. For those of you not familiar, it is a game where industry veteran Anne Holland would show 2 slides with 2 different creative, subject lines or other segmenting test and ask the audience… Which Test Won? Mostly everyone... [Read more]
