SendLabs: Email Marketing Industry: Let’s relax before crowning Facebook’s Project Titan as king
by Josh Nason
I don’t like to write in all caps format, but in this case, I will make an exception:
EVERYONE WORRIED/IN A TIZZY ABOUT FACEBOOK’S PROJECT TITAN SHOULD RELAX. THANKS. HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND.
Seriously people, have we not learned anything about product launches or making assumptions about things before we even understand what we’re making assumptions about?
This morning, I read that Facebook is expected to officially announce Project Titan Monday, highly anticipated to be the addition of an inbox client to their social network. The TechCrunch post I read used a reported FB internal reference of Titan being a ”Gmail killer’.
Before any e-murders take place, let’s take a step back, breathe and think about this first.
When Gmail first launched, did everyone up and leave their existing webmail clients? No. Many did, but it’s a transition over time and as I’ve written about, moving inboxes is a pain in the keister.
This is where I have an issue with people not immediately recognizing this. Unless Facebook was to create a migration tool that made this process easy, I don’t think I’d drop Gmail – or any webmail client – for a new Facebook account just because it’s a hot thing.
